Some parts of it are kind of out there, but it was fun.
Belasarius is way too smart. He never seems to make a wrong call.
There is a lot of action that is presented in an "OK" way, but nothing real special.
Some of the political and behind the scenes stuff is pretty interesting as is some of the set up for future books.
It is a book I have read before. It is good enough to make it worth reading again. It is part of the Baen free book series.
If you like military alternate history and ancient history, you may well like this. I do not think it is the best work available in either genre, but I did enjoy it.
I think this is actually the second book in the series.

Haven't read it yet but I'm reading the first one and it's good. So, naturally I have to say the second one is good and looks good too.
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this book ! The team of Flint and Drake have delivered another Wonderful story of the Past , and future , of the human races. From one small planet , a hundred different races of humanity have sprung and settled the galaxies. And only the Past can alter that enormous Diaspora. And something is trying to do just that !
I couldn't put my down . You will not be sorry either !
This is a great book. I highly recommend the Belisarius Saga to anyone who likes military fiction, alternate history, and historical fiction. This book is funny, sad, inspiring, and hopeful.
Great book. Plenty of action and lots of character depth. Never a dull moment, with characters from the future trying to change history to their advantage.
This was a very engrossing story with compelling characters and an intriguing premise. The only quibble I had with it was the near-omniscience of Belisarius. While it was also very cool, it got to the point where I didn't ever fear that he would fail. I also wish the authors could have made it a bit clearer who was who when it came the nationalities and ethnic groups in the book. But all in all, a very rewarding experience.
I've enjoyed all the Belisarius Saga - in fact have all six originals in paperback (MMP) editions. DL'd 'Heart of Darkness' a) just to have this on my , used now much more than paperbacks; and b) because it was free. Can barely remember the last time I bought a paperback or hard cover book.
Love my . 120 books since purchased, so much more convenient and saves so much shelf space. Proprietary format importing/saving from other sources is something of an issue, wish vendors would settle on a common format. But one can't have everything in this imperfect world.
The book is well written, moves fairly quickly, has good character development. The 'Link' alien elements seemed out of place and not that well incorporated to me. At the end, the two proposed emperors got confused. It's an interesting read for history buffs.
