Fifty years after the start of the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Church continues to struggle with the changes the council unleashed. Vernacular masses, dialogues with other faiths, new roles for the laity, and a revolution in how we understand Church all of these issues continue to spark debate and provoke heart-felt reactions among the faithful.
As time passes, we need to stop and look back at what was written during the Council and how we are living it today. This book presents Council documents in an accessible and concise way, exploring how they have played out over the following decades.
In a fair and even-handed manner, Lavin explores the reforms flowing from Vatican II and how they have been received. Each chapter focuses on a document that emerged from Vatican II and examines a disputed issue to spark discussion and debate.

Margaret Lavin's history of the Vatican II's documents reflect, I would think, the discussions and inputs of many class sessions with graduate students. The reflections on the genesis of the teachings and insights of the bishops at Vatican II and on the implementation of these teachings is excellent. At a half century from the "moments, one tends to forget how stunning those "moments" actually were, how they have changed the Church and society, and how much change is still ongoing. This is a most useful text for a discussion group of those who experienced both the "before" and "after" of the Council.Product details

Vatican II Fifty Years of Evolution and Revolution in the Catholic Church Margaret Lavin 9782896463299 Books Reviews
I have dipped into many books and articles on Vatican II and have come away confused. So many books are seen through the prism of a particular prejudice that it is hard to sort out fact from fiction. This is a wonderful introduction to one of the most important events of the 20th Century. My appreciation for Vatican II grew in leaps and bounds after reading this book. This is truly a remarkable work lucid and informative. This is a must read for those who are Catholic and anyone who has an interest on the impact of the Church in the world. It is neither left nor right. It will allow you draw your own conclusions. For myself it became clear to me that the work of the council was absolutely necessary and timely, especially in understanding the changes to the liturgy. It also is made clear that the Vatican II did not come out of the blue, rather, it was part of an evolution in thinking that had been brewing for years. I wouldn't even attempt to read another book on the council until reading this.
